Use * at the beginning, or end, or within a keyword to match any characters (or no characters).
 

Examples

 
 

compress*

Matches occurrences of “compress”, "compressor", "compressors", "compressed", "compresses", and any other word beginning with "compress".
 

*chargers

Matches occurrences of “chargers”, "dischargers", "turbochargers" and any other word ending with "chargers"
 

el*ing

Matches occurrences of "electroplating", "elevating" and any other word beginning with "el" and ending with "ing"
?

Use ? at the beginning, or end, or within a keyword to match any single character.
 
Examples  

ladder?

 Matches entries that contain words that start with ladder followed by a single character. For instance, this matches the word ladders.

2?,000

 Matches entries that contain the numbers 20,000 through 29,000. (This also matches words that start with the character 2 followed by a single character followed by the characters ,000.)
"a multi-word phrase" If you put a phrase with several words in quotes, search will find that exact phrase in the catalog.

Matches occurrences of “chimney caps”, but not index entries for "chimney" in the "caps" group, or "caps, chimney".
word1 w/<number of characters> word2

Finds items where word1 occurs within the indicated number of words of word2.

word1 and word2

Finds items that contain both word1 and word2.

 Matches entries that contain both the word steel and the word bridge.
word1 or word2

Finds items that contain either word1 or word2.

 
Example  

steel or bridge

 Matches entries that contain either the word steel or the word bridge.
(word1 or word2) and word3

Use parentheses () to group search phrases that use and with or.
 
Example  

(aluminum or plastic) and boat

 Matches entries that contain either the word aluminum or the word plastic and also contains the word boat.
